Tourism Ad Meets Reality Show

Old Port in Quebec City by nightIn a brilliant marketing move, Tourism Quebec is airing three, reality-type shows on New York City’s Fox Channel 5 this month. Viewers follow three, young, New York couples as they face “challenges” and go on scavenger hunts through Montreal, Quebec City and the Laurentians.

It appears from the preview at IQ-Adventure.com, that after the couples solve the puzzles and such (they aren’t nearly as demanding as those from the Amazing Race), they’re treated to fun couples’ activities — like a visit to the Scandinavian Spa or dinner at Quebec City’s La Concorde, a revolving restaurant.

Of course, all along the way, viewers learn about what there is to do in these areas of Quebec, hence, whetting the appetite of potential visitors. Five lucky winners who enter the Quebec trivia contest on IQ-Adventure.com will win plane fare (probably just from NYC) and a two-nights’ stay at a Fairmont Hotel in Quebec.

I think the “reality show” is a clever idea, and it’s too bad it’s not airing nationwide (I only found out about it after seeing the two-page ad in New York magazine), otherwise I’d probably tune in.

Quebec City celebrates its 400th anniversary this year with all sorts of special events — if you’d been thinking about a trip to Canada, seems like this might be the year to do it!

This is a pretty creative marketing move – and what with the writers’ strike forcing reruns of all the dramas and sitcoms on TV, I’ll bet a reality show like this will do very well.
