Travel Thoughts and Wishes for 2008

    By MudslideMama | January 18, 2008

Buddha King at Angkor Wat, by GlobeTrotterAnother travel writer I “know” (”know” is in quotes because I never met her, only online), recently put an interesting question meme on her blog. The idea is that people who are afflicted with the travel bug answer these questions, then pass them on to another travel lover. These are the questions, with my answers:

If you could take a dream trip in 2008, where would it be and why?

My dream trip would be a week - okay, two - in Australia and New Zealand. I already mentioned this in CajunMama’s blog about the Bucket List, and seeing that that was within the past month, my dream trip hasn’t changed yet!

If you could only visit one new (to you) city this year, which one would it be and why?

This is hard! There are so many. But I’m going to go with Angkor Wat. Cambodia is finally just beginning to creep out of the horrible socio-economic situation left behind by the Khmer Rouge, yet the culture is so open and forgiving - and of course, Angkor Wat was a finalist for the 7 New Wonders of the World.

If you could go back to one place this year that you’ve been to before, where, and why?

I would have to say Paris, because I was there for only 4 days, which really isn’t enough. Cramming all those museums and world-famous restaurants into less than a week didn’t really leave time to just stroll and appreciate where I was.

Do you think you might travel more or less this year than in previous years?Monks at Angkor Wat

Well, I’d say more traveling, but shorter distances from home.

What will you be looking for in your travels in 2008?

I’d hope that this coming year will leave me inspired to learn even more about the world, share in these experiences with my family, and also - to share the experiences with the world through the travelingmamas blog!

So, where is YOUR dream trip? And to where would you most like to return? Please post your answers to the questions above in the Comments area below. This is intended to be a meme: Feel free to pass it on to another traveler. Happy travels!

What a beautiful new blog! It’s great to see you in such nice surroundings with a focus that I can link to from my blog often.

      My dream trip?

Italy for a week followed by the ferry ride from Bari to Greece for a week.

      One city?

Toronto. It’s my home town and I miss it. I miss its diversity, its intelligence and its tolerance for everyone. And, I think it misses me too.

      Go back to one place?

Ireland. I was there as a reckless student for a short time and it is a forgiving kind of country.

      Travel more or less?

I think the price of gas is going to make the kind of traveling I do more restrictive, but the kids and will get there less often, but stay longer.

      I just love Kimba!

Angkor Wat is where Angelina Jolie filmed one of her Lara Croft films, and eventually adpoted a child from near there. It sounds like a place that creeps into your soul.

My dream trip? I dunno, I really have to think abou that one, because I have visited such awesome places this year.

One city? Rome. My mother tells me stories of her visit to Italy as a tween. Every time I go to her home, I gaze at the set of Murano glass she returned with.

One place to go back to? I’m with Kate on this one. Ireland. I visited there a few years ago and it really stayed with me. I wanted to buy a little thatch cottage near the coast and write a best-seller.

Travel more or less? This year I will probably travel less. Last year was full of wonderful trips, but it can get tiring traveling overseas alot. Plus, I missed my babies so much that shorter domestic trips may be what I need this year.

Kate from Babylune! Thanks for checking in here! We’re having a ball.

Dream Trip: It was 5 degrees when I dropped my kids off at the bus stop today. I want to go to Bali, Tahiti or some other hot and humid South Pacific island with my husband for a week.

New City: Is Key West a city or a region? I dunno. I want to go!

Repeat Visit: Ooooh. So hard. I only did two nights in Paris, so I think I’m with you, Jen. I’d like to return for longer stint.

More or Less: I’d say the same. I had some awesome trips last year — business and pleasure — and would like to keep that up. We had a wonderfully busy summer filled with lots of family travel.
