This is great! I always knew there were rules somewhere. I haven't been to Mardi Gras, but my husband, 11 year old daughter and I were in NOLA for Christmas and had a fabulous time. I'm trying to plan to come for the Jazz festival then next year Mardi Gras.

NEW ROADS, LA PLANS BIGGEST MARDI GRAS IN 87 YEARS!

New Roads, LA hosts the state’s oldest Mardi Gras celebration outside New Orleans. New Roads’ first recorded ball was held in 1881 and its earliest-known parade rolled in 1897. Each year, as many as 80,000 revelers visit the Pointe Coupee Parish seat, located on the banks of beautiful False River, to enjoy the family-friendly celebration of lavish floats, high stepping bands and dance teams, resplendent royalty, tons of throws, great local cuisine and wholesome day-long fun. Unlike the parades in New Orleans and elsewhere, New Roads’ parade participation is open to the public, new floats are built each year and there is an abundance of parking adjacent to the parade route and in off-street parking areas. Mardi Gras falls on February 24 in 2009, and New Roads is set to stage its biggest, most elaborate and greatest family-oriented Carnival celebration ever as follows:

11 a.m.: 87th annual Community Center Carnival Parade. Louisiana’s oldest Mardi Gras parade outside New Orleans. Theme is “A World of Cultures: Together We Make One.” Lineup: 30 freshly built floats, six bands and several drill units. Throws include metallic beads and small toys. Travels New Roads, Main, St. Mary, First, Poydras and Parent Streets. King and Queen unmask during parade when their float reaches reviewing stand at corner of New Roads and Parent Streets. Midway rides on New Roads Street. Community Center President is Wilmer Moore, 225-605-2645. Website: www.newroadsmardigras.com.

1:30 p.m.: 66th annual New Roads Lions Carnival Parade. First known Mardi Gras parade to be established as a charitable fundraiser. Monetary proceeds benefit Lions Charities. Theme is “Scenes From Around The World.” Lineup: 30 freshly built floats, nine bands and several drill units. Throws include specially minted doubloons and 1920s reproduction glass beads this year, in addition to metallic beads and small toys. Travels Mill, Community, Main, St. Mary, First, Poydras, Parent and New Roads Streets. King and Queen unmask during parade when their float reaches Courthouse Square reviewing stand. This year’s court costumes and regalia to be the most elaborate ever. $1,000 cash raffle follows parade at reviewing stand. Lions Club President is Stephen Jewell, 225-638-3311.
You don't have to go to New Orleans to experience Mardi Gras. There are celebrations in most south Louisiana towns. Try Baton Rouge, New Roads (very quaint) or Lafayette. I have heard there is even a celebration in Mobile, Alabama. A Mardi Gras parade experience should be part of every child's cultural education! Get yourself and your kids to the Mardi Gras! The truck parades in Metairie, Louisiana(New Orleans suburb) are very kid friendly and are during the day. Mardi Gras festivities go on from 12th night(January 6th) until Mardi Gras Tuesday each year. Some Louisiana bakeries ship King Cakes along with beads to places who do not celebrate the holiday.
