• We're Traveling Mamas sharing our adventures with the world. We offer tips on great (and not so great) places to visit with children and how to have the best family vacations -- but it's not all about the kids, of course! Romantic escapes, girlfriend getaways, and solo trips are also important to us. Plus, we cover industry news and review travel gear, and we love to give things away!

Free Game for Travel Fans - How Well Do You Know Our Planet?

    By MudslideMama | February 1, 2008

What’s Your Travel IQ? Photo by Patrick Q.A fun game has been passed from email to email lately (well, fun for geography buffs and frequent travelers). It’s called the Traveler IQ Challenge: This is a game in which you have to click as close as possible to given locations on a world map. I tried this a couple of times, and I’ve got to say it’s a lot of fun. It’s hosted by a site called minijuevos.com, but it looks like the game was created by TravelPod.

Preparing to play the game is easy - no need to sign up, enter a code, or provide an email address (isn’t that refreshing?) to get started. All you need to do is press start - but remember, speed counts! Just a little pressure to keep it interesting. Score is kept by how close you click to the stated location, and how quickly you do so. The Traveler IQ Challenge grades by levels, and Level One is World Cities (Easy), such as Munich and London. It progresses to Famous Places (Easy) and World Capitals (Easy), and then repeats with “Medium” level cities, places, and world capitals. And so on. Something else I appreciated about this game is that there is a little trivia at the bottom of the answer screen; for example, after a Famous Place was Musee du Louvre (The Louvre in Paris), the answer screen noted, “The Louvre houses over 300,000 pieces of art.” …Wow. MY house only houses over 300,000 pieces of Play-Doh.

With encouraging statements like “Your Map IQ is off the charts!” (this, for knowing where Los Angeles is, so it must be a random positive enforcement generator), the game cruises along at a pretty good clip. Players advance every 12,500 points. And - okay, I admit it - the first time I played, I only advanced to the 6th level. After a cup of coffee and putting on my Game Face, though, I progressed to the 8th level. Not too shabby for a part-time travel fan, I hope. How about you? How far along did you get? Remember, speed counts!
