Frontier Airlines Filing Chapter 11
By DesertMama | April 11, 2008

The last few weeks have been very disheartening for the airlines. We said goodbye to Aloha Airlines, ATA, and Skybus. American Airlines has grounded over 2,000 planes to correct a wiring issue, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. I may be one of the unhappy passengers Monday morning when I’m supposed to board a flight to Lexington, Kentucky.
Today Frontier Airlines made headlines with the announcement the airline is filing for bankruptcy. The good news for Frontier passengers is the airline will keep flying. The problems Frontier is experiencing isn’t comparable to the other airlines’ problems. Rising fuel prices are not being blamed; instead the isssue is with Frontier’s principal credit card processor’s announcment to increase the “hold-back” of customer receipts, an action that could be a real blow to Frontier’s liquidity.
According to Frontier’s website: “Frontier Airlines intends to continue normal business operations throughout its reorganization process. Specifically, we expect to continue to:
- Operate our full schedule of flights;
- Honor tickets and reservations and provide refunds and exchanges per our standard policy;
- Maintain our EarlyReturns frequent flyer program and other award-winning customer service programs;
- Provide employee wages and benefits without interruption; and
- Pay suppliers for goods and services received during the reorganization process.”

Ah! I’m flying Monday on United. Fingers crossed they aren’t in the news in coming days…

I was getting worried when they ceased flights departing from Baton Rouge. Frontier wasn’t here long. What is up with all these airlines?

And Frontier JUST announced that they started flying from Aspen, which is huge for us in the mountains. So, bizarre to me, they are expanding, yet announcing the Chapter 11…

Oops. Meant to say that Frontier WILL start flying in and out of Aspen later this month. Just read that AA canceled 595 more flights today. Desert, you’re still good to go for Monday?!

I’m flying next week - usually we go American, our miles are there. This time (who needs the anxiety) we’re going to go with Jet Blue. The airport’s a little further away, but at least I”m reasonably sure our plane will be in working order!

Not only do they hate their customers, but they hate their own employees.
When they say 45 minutes, they mean 45 minutes. They close the flight and put you on standby for the next flight. The lady at the check-in counter was having a bad day already at 6:30AM. She was rude and in a bad mood.
Even though I made it to the gate with 15 minutes before the flight was scheduled to leave, I was denied boarding along with an employee and his family. The employee had some of his family aboard, but the best the gate crew offered was to get a message to them advising that their family had been left behind 15 minutes prior to departure.
The sweaty gate agent’s response was that “he wasn’t going to have a ramp delay”. This tells me that Frontier Airlines has given him improper incentive. Their ‘on-time’ departure, which is often missed (at least 5% of the time), is more important than customer satisfaction. The employee who was left behind was complaining loudly to his family and stated that “Even though I work for Frontier, I never fly them. This is why”. He went on, but I won’t belabor the details here. The gate agents wouldn’t let the employee and his family pass.
As for Frontier Airlines’ gate crew: I can tolerate ignorant people and I can tolerate rude people, combine the two with a dash of apathy and you have a intolerable result.
Frontier Airlines’ customer service is in the red as are their books. It’s too bad that the toxicity is increasing throughout their organization. I used to like Frontier, but I am done with them. I wish I had paid the extra $100 for the United Airlines flight. Even though they’re not perfect, at least they suck less.
The true measure of anything is performance when things go wrong. Frontier fell down this day.
