Answering Corey's question - the OR Boys date back to a quartet named The Harmony Quartet, a sub-unit of the Georgia Clodhoppers - a group formed by the famous Wally Fowler. This group was based in Knoxville, just a short distance from where Oak Ridge literally sprang up in 1942-43. Fowler and his singing group performed often in Oak Ridge during 1944 and The Harmony Quartet became the most requested part of the singing act. They sang weekly at the Oak Ridge Rec Center. As soon as the bomb dropped in 1945, Fowler, always a marketer, capitalized on the name and changed The Harmony Quartet to the Oak Ridge Quartet. Soon they were singing at the Grand Ole Opry. In 1962, they changed their name to the Oak Ridge Boys.
