These are greats tips - I can verify that they do work. My kids are pretty young but we do lots of prep work before we go to a new place. Theyn both knew several songs and phrases in French before we went to Paris and were ready to hit the ground running.

I would extend the point about bookstores to local businesses generally. I try to patronize local businesses both at home and on the road. We have NO bookstore at all where I live, even though there is a university here, and let me tell you, that just stinks!

Agree with soultravelers3 about Turkey. We spent a month there (alas, pre-kids) and felt like our eyeballs would pop out of our heads every single moment.

Forget Mesopotamia, Turkey is the cradle of civilization. At least it seemed that way to me.

Wow, another great Traveling Mama post on a very interesting traveling mama! I really could relate to so much that was said.

Have you seen this source?

http://www.bookstoreguide.org/

We are bookstore and library fanatics, even my child acts like she has found a candy store when we find good ones. ;) We have written some reviews on that site and it is a handy site too for travelers.

Might I suggest Turkey to Kim for her ancient civilizations tour coming up? We did a 7 month ancient civilizations tour last year so have lots of info about such on our Soultravelers3 site.

Americans do not tend to think of Turkey, but it is cheap ( LOTS cheaper than Italy with the dollar bound to keep tanking) and they have more Roman and Greek ruins that Greece or Italy. It is also really easy to do independently and the warmest hospitality we have ever encountered.
