Where the Heck is Rodanthe?

Other posts by MountainMama

I’ve seen that trailer for the romantic movie Nights in Rodanthe twice in the last month or so, before watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Mamma Mia! Both times, i turned to my girlfriend (of course I went to these chick flicks with a fellow chick) and said, “We’ve got to see that movie.” I’m a sucker for romance, Richard Gere and beaches — not necessarily in that order.

Alas, my mama friend and I were planning to sneak out during the day tomorrow to catch a matinee (how decadent does that sound?), but my dear husband scheduled the Roto-Rooter guy to come pump our full septic tank (TMI?) sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — smack dab in the middle of movie time.

We’ll try to see the movie (also staring Diane Lane and based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks) this weekend, perhaps, while in Keystone on our girlfriend getaway (in between spa treatments and shopping – jealous, yet?). But in the meantime, I did a little web reconnaissance to find out a) how to pronounce “Rodanthe” and b) if it’s the name of a real place and c) where Nights in Rodanthe was filmed.

Turns out, you say it “ro-dan-thee,” and the town is a real one, located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The movie was filmed in the Outer Banks (click here to get the “as seen in the movie” details from the tourism board) and Wilmington, North Carolina.

The exterior of that wonderfully romantic and weathered beach house that Diane Lane is running as an inn is an honest-to-goodness vacation rental. According to a story in the Virginian Pilot, the five-bedroom house rents for $3,785 a week in the summer. Since the movie opened at the end of September, owners have been beating away visitors — up to 100 a day — who want to get a close-up look at the house that starred in the film.

Meanwhile, I’m going to download the song from the trailer onto my iPod: Gavin Rossdale’s “Love Remains the Same.” Love his gravely voice!

Curses. Please think of me as you’re munching popcorn — I’ll be chillin’ with the Roto Rooter man.

It’s the first time I’ve seen the name … so I’d have said ‘ro-danti’ (why did I suddenly think of an Italian rat?’) and would have guessed it was a Greek island somewhere.

I’m a guy… and I’m gonna see this for Diane Lane. A super talented and classy actress!
