Susan, you will love staying @ the Affinia Manahattan !! Were from the UK and have stayed there for Christmas 2007 and 2008, unfortunately we are not going this year and we are absolutely gutted not to be going. The hotel is so close to every where you will want to go, as well as having big rooms, beds, great restaurent and Niles bar is good for evening drinks and fun. Yes parts of the hotel look tired, hallways etc but it more than makes up for it in so many other ways. Really good food places nearby, something for everyone really. One 'must do' place to eat is the Empire Diner on 2nd Avenue, it's a converted stainless steel railway carriage that Betty Davis used to have breakfast in every day. You will not get a better NYC breakfast anywhere else, guaranteed !! Only 5 min cab ride from the Affinia. Also take the children to the American Natural History Museum next to Central Park, the one where 'A Night At The Museum' was filmed, an excellant day out for the whole family. Then you can come straight out of there across the road, walk through Central Park, which is breathtaking that time of the year luckily we had snow there last Christmas, to the Central Park Zoo which is also really good. A horse drawn carriage ride through Central Park is also a Christmas Day must, espeacially if it's been snowing !! Ashort walk down from the Affinia towards Grand Central Station is Bryant Park, the ice rink will be open and they have loads of great craft stalls all around the rink with loads of places to grab a lovely hot mulled wine. You can also skate @ the Rockerfeller Centre or in Central Park, but if you can book it book Christmas Lunch / Dinner @ the Boat House in Central Park, really magical and excellent value. Have a wonderful time in NYC, we cannot wait to go back again !!

I liked the Top of the Rock at Rockafeller Center. It's clean and shiny Swaravski crystal. Beautiful view of the city.

Christmas in NY is magical and hectic, and I love it! Living close I make it into the city often, but Christmas in New York—the shopping, the crowded streets the smell of chestnuts, it is wonderful and exhausting! If your in NY and you need some quite time I suggest Central Park. It's truly is a MAN-MADE wonder! There is a huge skating rink open day & nite & a zoo near the Plaza Hotel, a castle, trails, a carosel, walking tours and just plain old people watching. I love Central Park!
