The Traveling Mamas are thrilled to be teaming up with Fodors.com to provide articles for the site’s Family Travel News section this week.

First up: My post on whether or not pulling kids out of school for vacation is a good idea. Frankly, I’m all for it, with a few caveats. Take a peek my Fodors.com piece, and comment in the very active Fodors.com forum or let us know your thoughts below. I know this is a controversial subject!

And tune into the Family Travel News on Fodors.com all week long, where we’ll be posting about both humorous and helpful family-travel topics!

Did you know, in Britain, they made, or are making it ILLEGAL? Don’t think I’ve heard about anyone being prosecuted for it yet, though.

  5. I say Go for it. I remember being a kid myself when my mom used to pull me out of school to travel. Many parents did the same thing. The school didn’t like it, they started being more strict about missing classes for whatever reason, which is ridiculous. Kids can make up what they miss at school but can’t make up for the time they should spend with their family, bonding, creating new memories. Today, when parents are working more, spending less time with their kids, schools shouldn’t make a big deal out of it. It’s a chance for a family to spend more quality time together, especially if your kids are little. So don’t worry about the school, think about your kid.

When my children were younger and there was a special family event, I pulled them out of school, on average less than once a year. Now that I have a high schooler, it’s a harder decision. My sister is getting married on a Saturday across the country, so we’ll take Friday off and fly out, but now it has to be an event of that stature, not just an extra ski day.
