Mama on the Move? First Day on Hawaii’s Big Island

Yesterday was the 90th birthday of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! And – you better believe it – the Mudslide Family celebrated this incredibly important date by spending it in the very back row of a full United flight to Kona, Hawaii. The back row, famous for its immediate proximity to the coach bathrooms, is also the repository for a small, but pungent, assortment of smells. We really should have gotten to SeatGuru before it was too late, but there you have it.

Late Afternoon at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on the Big Island

And now, on the Big Island, two of us are thrilled to start a day of exploration and relaxation. The other two (of whom I am one) are pretty tired, since the youngest Mudslide Kid spent the night fighting a losing battle with some germ she picked up on the plane. She SAYS she’s feeling all better, in between hacking coughs. We’ll see. All I know for sure is, the resort is wonderful, the view off our lanai is perfect, and there’s a chance that half my family might have to spend our first day of our Hawaiian vacation inside. Even Ripley would have a hard time believing that.

  1. Keep humming that song, “I will survive” in your head while you sip a Mai Tai or some fruity tropical drink; preferably laced with rum.

Keep us posted. I hope your little one is feeling better soon. Aloha.

  2. Oh, I am so jealous. Do be sure to go see the active lava flows at Kilauea at night – it is spectacular. Ant the walk across the Kiluaea craer is otherworldly. Have a wonderful time!

I hope she feels better soon. Stretch out in a chair on the lanai and catch a few weeks while you listen to the ocean (in between moans).

    Miss Ya!

Bummer! Hate that airplane air – some bad stuff. I hope the island breezes bring health and wellness.

I don’t have kids, but I’m sure traveling with them can be quite challenging. My parents have told me stories which involve travling internationally, jeers and stares from other airline passengers, and lots of crying.
