Unfortuately we were busy finishing a work project today, but looking forward to participating next year. We do cubscouts at our house which gives lots of great opportunities for service for the whole family. We have done everything from collecting cans to help the zoo to cleaning up our local beach.

Think about the global poverty statistics included in the flyer – those in King’s time – and those in the present and then copy and hand this flyer out to strangers while wishing them a Happy Martin Luther King Day. Thanks for pointing this out, I hadn’t heard about it, so when you tweeted it I went right on over to the usaservice.org and signed up. I have been wanting to do a beach clean-up since I was recently reminded of what all the tiny pieces of plastic and styrofoam do out in the ocean, and resolved to do something about it. Plus, if you have kids, it’s great to teach them young about service. I’m off to do my beach clean-up this weekend, and hope to do many more!

I love that you’ve shared this experience with us. I am notorious for “not having enough time” for projects like this. I make regular donations to several local organizations, but I imagine the feeling of actually getting out there and seeing the difference you make is unmatchable.
