Tips For Staying Healthy While Traveling

Announcement: Every time I fly I get sick. Usually, I catch a cold or worse like last year when I caught the flu – which blossomed into something bigger and put me in a New Orleans ER facing a 14-hour wait. Instead of hanging out I returned home and ended up in my local hospital for four days with a case of double pneumonia.

And yes, even when I was working as a flight attendant I was sick – a lot. The winter months were the worst. I used rubber gloves when possible, washed my hands regularly with soap and club soda over the galley trash can and lathered myself in Warm Vanilla Sugar scented hand sanitizer from Bath and Body Works but I still caught colds and had to deal with ear infections. Then, I stopped flying and the days/nights I spent on Dayquil/Nyquil decreased to the more normal once or twice a year. But when I started flying again as a travel writer the sniffles returned.

On a recent trip to Turks and Caicos I knew my chances of getting sick upon my return home were very, very good. My itinerary started on the West Coast and took me on three flights and through four airports – during sick season. Then I had to do it again on my return. I had been introduced to FlyRight Jet Lag Formula and decided to cross my fingers and put my faith into this all natural product. I took it the easy way and added half of the formula to my airport bought water bottle and drank it throughout the day. When I arrived in the Caribbean I felt fantastic! (It was just too bad I got in so late.) The next day I woke up still feeling terrific (not jet lagged at all) and as if I had spent 13 hours the day before running through massive airports due to gate changes and sitting next to a sneezing college student. I used Fly Right on my return and not only did I feel good, I didn’t get sick!

Let me shout, “FlyRight rocks!

No matter what your usual jet lag symptoms are (poor circulation, sore throat, dehydration, cold and flu) FlyRight’s ingredients were chosen to combat the common symptoms travelers face. I highly recommend FlyRight for staying healthy while traveling – especially if you are venturing through several timezones.

In addition to using Fly Right here are some other precautions to take while traveling.

1. Wash your hands every chance you get.

2. Use hand sanitizer regularly.

3. Avoid sugar. Sugar decreases your immune system, leaving you susceptible to getting sick.

4. Don’t touch your face, including your eyes.

5. Avoid alcohol in flight.

6. Get plenty of sleep before your trip.

7. Exercise before and during your trip.

8. When it comes down to it, use common sense while traveling. Take care of yourself and you will be lot less likely to get sick while traveling.

Happy, safe and healthy travels!

    Hi DesertMama-

If you get sick every time you travel, you have to try Nozin! This stuff will be your new best travel buddy. It kills the 99% of the bacteria in your nose and gives you an 8 hour barrier against catching new germs!

    Good advice!

Thre’s nothing like someone with the sniffles getting cooped up in a metal tube with 50-200 people for a few hours.

A hint I’d give … at buffet meals, try to get as far to the front as possible. While the standard of hygiene in the kitchen may be impeccable, can you be sure that everyone picking over those rolls used the tongs, or washed their hands since they last used the toilet?

So funny, I tried Fly Right on my trip to Aruba (also killer travel itinerary from Colorado). I could not finish my 2-oz (4-oz?) suggested dosage in my water bottle. The strong herbal smell got the best of me.

That said, I did manage about half of it, and felt good when I arrived (after a red-eye!). I was also conscious of drinking a LOT of plain water en route.

Thanks for the tips, Allison and Keith.

Kara, that is funny. I like the smell/taste of it. It reminds me of tea.

  5. I will have to find this product, not so much for as for my husband!
I don’t supposed it makes someone not hate flying, too?

I ALWAYS get sick when I travel, too, but hadn’t heard of FlyRight–thanks for the tip! A Neti Pot is great too for washing out your sinuses when you land.

My husband and I went to Alaska on a cruise. We felt great thru the twelve days of running and seeing everything, but the flight home has made us sick. I want to know what to do now. It has been over a week and we are still have nauseea, dizziness, can’t eat, and so tired. We are eating light foods and drinking water. But by noon we are on the couch. ( We came home to company and a funneral so daily rest was not there at the return home.) Could we have caught a bug/virus that needs to be checked out? (I called my Dr. and was told to take Imodeum and if not better in 4 days call him again.) Another couple that went with us went to bed rest for three days and now they have trouble sleping at the right time.
    Do you have any suggestions???
