Motorola Talkabout Two-Way Radios Review & Giveaway

Other posts by MountainMama

motorola1Heading to a theme park, campground or ski slopes anytime soon? (Okay, maybe not ski slopes in the U.S.) If so, consider a pair of two-way radios to keep in constant contact with your traveling companions. Two-way radios are especially key in remote spots — like on camping trips — where cell phones may not work. But they are frankly fun to play with just about anywhere.

My family tested the Motorola Talkabout Two-Way Radios on a recent camping trip, dude ranch vacation and hotel stay. We gave the kids a radio so they’d be reachable as they walked the campground loop, and we let them take one while they tried to find our hotel room on their own (didn’t quite happen; they read the signs wrong — but they didn’t panic since they heard us on the other end of the radio). The kids actually got the most use out of them when we took two cars to the dude ranch (Dad had to leave early) and they chatted with each other between cars. Of course the most appealing feature of the radios for the kids: the built-in flashlight.

Other perks for this particular pair: you can receive weather alerts from the NOAA Weather Radio; the radios can work up to 9 miles away in “medium-interference” situations (like on a flat lake); there’s a “hands-free” option; and there’s an emergency alert button you can hit to send out a distress call (perhaps best not to teach young children this signal, lest they “cry wolf” and get in big trouble).

One feature that drove me nuts until I figured out how to turn it off: the “I’m done talking” beep that occurs when you’re finished transmitting. This so-called “Roger beep” is optional, though, so that made me happy.

motorola2Overall, this radio that retails for $80 (a pair) has more bells and whistles than the average family might need. But if you’ve got a geeky mate who might dig all the extras, it’s a fabulous gift.

That said, you can also comment below to win a pair of Motorola Talkabout Two-Way Radios. Yes, Motorola has generously offered to mail a U.S. winner a set. All you have to do is leave a comment below and tell me on what summer trip or excursion you might use them. Enter until midnight (EST) Tuesday, June 23; I’ll draw a winner randomly and announce a name on Wednesday, June 24. Again, only U.S. entrants and no immediate family of the Traveling Mamas!

These would be great on our 12 hour drive to our favorite camping spot in Florida! This year our son and his wife will be bringing their camper too so we could talk while traveling to coordinate fuel and potty stops…not to mention all the communication we could use it for in the two weeks we’ll be at the campground.

  2. Suzanne says:

Walkie talkies are a great way to give older kids a little more leash but still keep in touch. They’re great on a cruise, at the beach, or a theme park. We have a set already, but these are more deluxe.

  3. Brian says:

Cool competition. Hope you will ship to Puerto Rico if I’m lucky enough :o ). Would be excellent for trekking through El Yunque rainforest.

  4. Jennifer Bondurant says:

Would be great for trip to Canada – 20 hour drive for fishing trip! Kids would love the flashlight.

  5. MRS.MOMMYY says:

agree perfect for camping and just for hiking and playing at the park

  6. Heather S says:

I would use them on our trip to our family cabin in the San Juan Islands! Yay!

  7. Angela says:

We plan on going on a trip this Fall and this would come in handy- maybe I won’t get lost this time!

  8. shel says:

Our family just took a trip from Cleveland to Chicago for my son’s college graduation. It was a caravan of thee cars and my mom and dad were in one car following my sister and I in our cars. My mom doesn’t own a cell phone and I thought it would have been a great idea to have these for the 6 hour drive down so we’d know when they needed a rest stop or gas up along the way.

We’re planning another trip in July to take my son to his new job in New Orleans. These would be perfect; I’m driving the moving van and my son is driving his car. We’d always be in touch with these and they’re far quicker and easier than trying to communicate via cell phone.

  9. Bobbie-Jo Bogan says:

These would be great for my husbands water-ski tournaments this summer! I am always wandering around with the kids trying to figure out where he is!

  10. Nicole L says:

I think these would be perfect for a stay-cation here in Washington DC. We’re planning to brave the millions of people on the National Mall for the July 4th fireworks and with the huge crowds, police, fireworks, and summer thunderstorms, these would really be convenient and make me feel safer!

  11. Karon Warren says:

I would love to try these out when we float down the river with my husband’s family at their upcoming family reunion!

  12. Rita M says:

These things would be awesome for any vacation — the resort hotels are so big & there’s always someone wanting to head to the beach, another poolside, yet another to shop and some just prefer stay in the room, so what a great to stay in touch to regroup for dinner!

  13. Mickeyfan says:

This might not fit your idea of a summer excursion, but: they would be great for 2 farmers irrigating or harvesting, or in case of a breakdown. You can let each other know what you’re doing and where, and the 9 mile range would be excellent out here on the prairie!

  14. Leslie says:

  15. jill says:

  18. Kristie G says:

We always take a set of these along on a cruise ship. They usually work on the main deck, sometimes a little hard to hear if your room is way at the bottom. But they also work great in the ports of call.

  19. Sara says:

I was just telling my husband how I thought these would be handy for our summer vacation to the beach. I wouldn’t normally chat it up at the beach or pool but when you have someone back at the house/room and you need to ask them to bring the baby a fresh bottle and you don’t want to walk the 10 minutes to get one item every half hour this would be great!!!

  20. We plan a hiking trip so this will be fun to have during our hike. What a great giveaway!

  21. desiree kelley says:

    my son would love these

  22. Dan Wulfman says:

My wife and I and our 2 sons (7 and 10) will be cruising around the world aboard Semester at Sea’s floating college campus this fall. We will visit 11 countries during the 110-day voyage, which should offer endless opportunities for getting separated from our curious little rascals. Train stations, public markets, bus terminals, crowded city streets — I get chills just thinking about losing a kid in any of these places. The radios just might prevent a heart attack or two. And knowing that they are hanging out with some (much) older co-eds by the ship’s pool and have *not* fallen overboard would be comforting, too! (Awesome family travel blog, btw!)

  23. Heather Greer says:

My family could use these on any summer trip. We could let the kids play with them in the yard. We could take them out camping. We could use it while out on the river. It is versatile. Thanks for the chance.

  24. Theresa says:

  36. Meredith says:

We have a small place on a nearby lake; these would be great for keeping up with the kids and grandkids when they’re out fishing in a boat or when they’re exploring the property around the lake’s edge on a golf cart – - what a convenience as well as a safety tool!

  196. Jane says:

Great way to communicate going to Disney or other parks

  201. I have an old set the kids use while riding bikes to friends homes in our subdivision. We have to limited their distance because the reception goes out if they are to far away from our home. We also use them when camping and on vacation. This summer we are headed to Orange Beach, Alabama, Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Colorado and would love a new pair with longer distance reception. The kids will be so excited

  202. Amanda S. says:

I’d use them for walks in our neighborhood! My older girls always want to go ahead of me, and this would be a good way to keep track of them.

I am leaving for Europe in 15 days for my college graduation trip! I’ve never really traveled anywhere before so this is going to be such a fun trip! I can’t wait to see all the amazing sites. Although, if I happened to get lost from my group, these would come in handy. These would be perfect to communicate with my friends on the trip!!

  211. I recently went on a cruise & found out the Cell phones I had planned on using to meet up with family on land or sea was WAY to expensive at several dollars a minute.
I WISH I had a walkie talkie. Well I could really use it for my upcoming trip to Disney World when everyone wants to go in different directions. They have a million uses. Even my beach bike rides. And for winter Skiing its a must!

  212. Bill K says:

We are taking a cruise and plan to use them at sea where there are no cell towers.

  213. Donna L says:

We would use the walkie talkie when we go to the Smokey Mountains.

  214. Auriette says:

My husband doesn’t have a cell phone. It would be great if we could each have one of these walkie-talkies for when we’re Christmas shopping (lost in the Black Friday crush) or at the flea market. We don’t anticipate having a proper summer vacation, but I can see many uses for these on a daily basis!

  231. James says:

These would be great for our two kids and their friends when we take them to the beach. They always like to be ‘away from mom and dad’ but we could still be in touch with them and have them checkin once in awhile while we are setup at different spots!

  232. Penny F. says:

  240. Deborah R says:

Hubby likes to “race” vintage gokarts so we do a bit of traveling to tracks during the summer. He likes to “visit” with the other racers and I’m content to relax and read in a shady spot, so the Motorola Talkabout Two-Way Radios would be perfect for us, especially since cells don’t always work where we are.

  241. Shahid Hatia says:

These radios would be perfect for an outdoor trip such as camping so that if people want to do different things then they can use these radios to contact each other in case of emergencies. this would also be good for road trips and to use at a large theme park of exhibition.

  242. Donna says:

We would use the radios when we go camping.

  243. Veronica Garrett says:

I could use them on our summer sxcursion to the Blue Ridge Mpuntains.

  245. Michelle B says:

I would use them when we go camping.

  246. Denyse says:

    Great for hiking

  247. Rebecca says:

My grandson and I have agreed that we will visit the closest amusement park when he comes for the remainder of the summer. Now, he thinks his granny is pretty cool BUT, he’ll be sorely disappointed when she opts NOT to get on the roller coaster with him. We usually spend our time swimming but he’s getting older and looking for more fun than Putt Putt and the Pool. While (hopefully) he won’t use it while riding, it would be great to communicate when the line is overlong (and granny starts to see monsters around every corner because he should have been through by now). This would allow him SOME independence while granny can breathe a little easier (where are you? I’m over here, Granny, beside the green clown trashcan. Can you see me waving?). Yup, this device could potentially add another 10 years on my life.

  248. Joanna Smith says:

We live out on the lake and between our 3 kids, my husband and I and a constant stream of guests over at our house, people are everywhere. These 2-way radios would be great so I can communicate when my husband is out on the boat with our kids and or friends and I am at the shore and I need to let them know important information, like when we are having lunch, or when we are having dinner, or maybe give him an important message like, honey, can you pick up the Wilson’s down at their cottage and bring them over here. We can also let our son and daughter use these when they want to be out on the jet ski behind our boat and we need to get a message to them. Basically, we will find more than a hundred different instances where these fantastic Motorola Talkabout two-way radios will be useful in our lives. Also, in the winter when we are skiing we can use these radios to communicate with one another as to which hill and run we are taking. Oh, the possibilities are endless! Thanks so much for the chance to enter.

  267. Shawn says:

These would come in handy during hurricane evacuations, it’s usually so hard to get through on the cell phone when you have about 300,000 people all trying to use the cell towers at the same time. We like to call these our Hurrications, since it’s about the only time that we get to travel.

  268. Phyllis Jenkins says:

with 5 grown & married kids and 9 (expecting 3 more grandkids)I am ALWAYS on the go somewhere with someone and these would be a wonderful thing to use especially at festivals, flea markets and even the mall. Now I could ‘accidently on purpose’ wander away without getting lost.
