LUSH Contest Giveaway – Natural Antibiotic Travel Soap

Other posts by MudslideMama

The Traveling Mamas love vacations, of course, and the joy of discovering new places in the world is only beat by sharing those discoveries with our kids (and readers). What we don’t love? Getting sick while on vacation. When a child gets sick on a trip, it’s no fun for anyone. But it’s hard to avoid all those nasty germs in new places (not to mention planes, trains, and cabs). I’ve been hesitant to use Purell too liberally with my children – some vague fear of those antibiotic-resistant superbugs is involved here, along with that stinky, stinging smell.  This Lush soap contest giveaway offers a nicer way to help keep us healthy on the road.

Lush Contest Giveaway Soap

LUSH brand fresh, handmade soaps are fantastic. A new soap, 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt, takes Lush Contest Giveaway Soapthe natural route to fighting off bacteria with the inclusion of oregano oil. Oregano oil is a natural antibiotic, and it’s a strong antifungal, antiviral oil as well.  This is no myth:  In fact, nurses have started using oregano oil to help prevent catching the antibiotic-resistant superbug staphylococus aureus (MRSA). Further, the Journal of Applied Microbiology reported (2000) that oregano oil fights off 25 different bacteria in lab tests.  LUSH created 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt to provide a natural alternative to other antibiotic soaps – and it smells better, too. Along with the oregano oil, there’s honey and rose petals for a floral scent (rather than, er, a pizza scent).

We’re giving away 13 bars of 13 soap to one LUCKY winner. Yes, in this case, 13 will be someone’s lucky number! That’s enough soap to keep yourself clean for many, many travel adventures. Just leave a comment below describing the most disgustingly germy place you’ve been (no need to get gross in your description if you don’t wanna). In other words, let’s hear about a place where having a bar of 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt would have really been useful. Enter until 11:59 p.m. (EST) Tuesday, September 8, 2009. We’ll choose a comment number at random, and annouce a winner Wednesday, September 9. (One entry per person; US mailing addresses only.) Have fun with this, and remember to wash your hands afterwards.

  1. Mary Jo says:

Disgusting and germy? Sounds like my work place — on an airplane!

  2. Any airplane bathroom, or airport bathroom. I understand the issues on the plane (can someone explain why people walk in there barefoot?!!?), but no idea why so many airport bathrooms are so scummy, US and worldwide.

    And any bar men’s bathroom.

  3. Jessica says:

Headed to NYC where 10% of the people supposedly have Swine Flu. Soap needs to be packed in each and every bag so I don’t bring it back to Sweet Home Alabama with me.

  4. Christy says:

One of the dirtiest places I took my kids recently was a fast food restaurant, where the kids were playing on the indoor playground. Maybe it’s just me, but why do moms lets their kids go on there barefoot? Many people in the world get sick from going barefoot. Not as often in the US as other places, but I know athletes foot is not fun. My kids socks were so filthy after just playing for about half an hour, I almost threw them out; will wash with lots of bleach. I was tempted to ask an employee if they cleaned it lately, but just left disgusted.

  5. Joe P says:

I have three kids. The school is disgusting that they go to. They are required to bring wipes and hand sanatizer (by their mom and I) and use them on every desk. Amazing how many send their kids to school sick. IF a child has a fever, they call the parents and the emergency number.. can’t get ahold of mom or she sin’t going to come? The child goes back to the classroom! Wonderful Florida Public school system.

  6. Linda says:

In my backyard this summer because the township decided that we need public sewer, started it then stopped in the middle of it/….Now my sheppie finds it “intriguing” :-( EEEKKKKKKK

  13. Brian E. says:

I found myself at a remote truck stop in Nevada earlier this year in the wee hours of the morning when I stopped for gas; I picked up the gasoline nozzle before realizing that it had some unidentified “stuff” on the handle and got it on my hands… I wanted to wash it off in the bathroom before getting back into my car, but the only soap there was an empty (and filthy) dried up bottle of dish soap. I asked the cashier for something to clean my hands and she suggested I BUY a bottle of hand sanitizer…finally, she offered a few squirts of window cleaner and a paper towel.

  14. Kathy Wilson says:

I have a phobia about public restrooms. So, when I travel, I will wait until I can wait no longer. This soap would at least make me feel a little cleaner. Heck, if I had 13 bars, I’d carry one in my purse.

  15. jenn says:

Bar bathrooms, they are so foul! I was in one a couple months ago that had a pair of dirty underwear on the floor!

  17. Tianna Lawrence says:

Lush & Germy try the front desk @ a public golf course… why because when men are in a rush using a urinal means u don”t need to wash your hands. “It’s not like you’re wiping anything!” Then they hand u their money to pay for the round. You haven’t heard any water running….. Purel dries out your hand and runs out pretty quickly on a Weekend morning when this is repeated 100 times in a 2 hour period. EEEwwww

  18. joanne Willey says:

    germs……….eeeeeck

  19. Tanya says:

I love Lush products. I don’t live near a store so I’m not able to buy them as much as I would like. The dirtiest place — a gas station bathroom in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. You would think a popular resort area would be fairly decent, but I still cringe when I think about it. I won’t go into details .. gag … gag …. gag.

  20. Kimmy says:

  28. Debbie Lyon says:

I’ve been in some campground bathrooms that were so bad it took your breath away. Add in some outdoor creatures and it makes you want to wash your entire body.

    mverno@roadrunner.com

  35. Danielle says:

Disneyland. You would not believe the things I have seen children lick, or people touch then touch. 1000s of people, boogers, sneezes, spit, wedgies, not washing hands, who knows what else and then they touch everything. If I thought too much about it I would have to take a bath in hand sanitizer after each trip!

Close runner up is the restroom at Chain Reaction (concert venue) after a concert. Its an all ages venue but the youngins like to pre-game. Its worse than any bar bathroom, trust me.

  36. Tari Lawson says:

  37. jen says:

2nd most disgusting thing I’ve been around was left on the back of a toilet on a train–suppose someone missed the target when going around a big curve or something. Gross, but I had to go.
Most disgusting thing was a few days later when I took the train back (there’s only one that runs that route) and the bathroom had obviously not been cleaned–it was still there, starting to dry out.

  38. Cheryl F says:

the bathroom at the store around the corner..the store is immaculate but the ladies bathroom which is huge is filthy, hubby says the men’s room is always clean.

  39. Sharon Harmon says:

I hate to say it, but it was my husband’s grandma’s bathroom. It was so filthy dirty I was afraid to even use the grimey bar of soap that was there or touch any part of the toilet or sink. She’s a precious lady, but the daughter and son-in-law who live with her don’t help clean her house. I’d do it but they live out of state. Thank you for the contest!

  44. amber says:

A sweaty mosh pit at a concert – yuck! Fun to be in front row to watch the show, not fun going home coated in the sweat of everyone around you. Ewwies.

  45. Susan Ledet says:

Oh, you’ve brought back horrible memories of germs! We had to evacuate during Hurricane Katrina and the most disgustingly germy place was a gas station restroom off of the interstate in Louisiana. Literally, thousands of people were fleeing New Orleans and it looked liked they all stopped there. We had to wait at least 40 minutes in line so you can just imagine the scene. It still makes my skin crawl to think of it. Yuck!

  46. tracy davis says:

There are way too many dirty bathrooms when you travel

  47. mickeyfan says:

Ok, we were travelling and it got late and we HAD to stay somewhere. This motel’s bathroom was gross (can you imagine it had pubes all over the floor!). My daughter was about 11 and got sick in the night. She cried because she had to go in there to throw up!

There was this little gas station restroom in TN that was so disgusting I felt like I needed a complete shower when I came out of it. I immediately used wet ones on every exposed part of my body. It was so gross!

  51. Cassandra says:

Ugh. . .when I was in college, I was moving into an on-campus apartment for the summer. I was totally excited about it until I entered and found how disgusting the place was and how untidy my summer roomie would be–mildew in the shower, stains in, on and around the toilet bowl, pizza boxes and other opened food containers left lying around. Needless to say, I cleaned up what I could and spent as little time there as possible.

  52. Linda Lansford says:

the gym is a place that is hard to keep germ free

  65. Vicky H. says:

I am an anime fan, and one rule that just about all anime conventions put in their program books is “Please shower/bathe and wear deodorant.” Does everyone abide by that rule? Of course not, otherwise it wouldn’t be in the rules every year. So, it’s also very common to get ill after a convention weekend. *lucked out this year*

  66. Christina says:

Of course a “wayside” traveller’s stop woods bathroom!

  67. Theresa DeRosa says:

A bathroom at a rest stop on I-91 on the way to VT.

  68. Carol G says:

I think I have hit some of the same reststops some of the others have cited, but the worst I have seen was a house where the owner developed some psychological problems and was overrun with animals and their resultant filth, dirty dishes and other garbage, and the resulting bugs. It took more than some handwashing after working in that!

  69. Elizabeth says:

I once visited a home, as a health professional, where the plumbing was not working and the inhabitants were using their cooking pots as chamber pots…in the kitchen. There was rubbish piled ankle deep throughout the living quarters. It’s been 10 years; but the sights and smells are forever etched in my mind.

We always carry soap when we travel.

    Thanks for hosting this giveaway…

  70. Anna says:

The grossest place I’ve ever been was in the girls’ bathroom of my college dorm. It got to the point where I actually did buy antibacterial soap just so I would feel a bit cleaner. It’s also discouraged me from ever sharing a bathroom in the future.

  74. Alli says:

There is a supermarket that recently added a branch of our bank inside the store. The first time I entered this store it smelled so awful I gagged. HARD. It was the most disgusting, germy market that I have ever entered. The floors looked so grimy!

  75. Lisa D says:

Well there are two places one was a gas station bathroom which I needed to use there were no options for not here. I was desperate. Also there is a tenant of mine who is a hoarder and it is the worst place I have ever in life been.

  76. Lu D. says:

natural, handmade lush ahhh sounds divine

  77. SiSi says:

Thinking about the most germy place I’ve been is making me feel dirty!! But it will probably have to be this Walmart bathroom that I went to… it looked like it had not been cleaned the whole day… so disgusting!

  78. Elkaye says:

Personally, I think public restrooms are the worst when it comes to germs.

  79. Michele P. says:

There was a restaurant I used to go to quite a bit that had the most delicious Central American food. Everything seemed fine, and you could actually watch them preparing the food in the back. It closed for awhile and some other people bought it. Anxious to go back, hubby and I paid a visit. I thought it was a bit strange that they had done some remodeling, and that one of the things they’d done was close up the area where you could watch them in the kitchen. It was daytime and hubby and I had just sat down to eat when I noticed movement behind me. Thinking it was a spider, I turned to see two HUGE cockroaches dueling it out on the seat behind me…they continued their fight onto the table as I ran to the bathroom to get rid of the meal I had just started eating. While in the bathroom, more roaches that scurried away when I turned on the light. We threw some money on the table, and hurried out, leaving everything still on the table. I went home and took a nice long shower, trying to rid myself of the effects of my meal in the roach infested restaurant. A few weeks later the place shut down…condemned by the health inspectors. To this day it hasn’t reopened.

  86. Christie says:

Public bathrooms have been mentioned enough so I’ll try to be different. For my job, I had to visit someone’s home. It was infested with roaches, open cans of cat food, food containers and worse. Even the toilet was backed up. I went home, threw my clothes directly into the washer without letting them touch anything in my house and then went straight to the shower. Unfortunately, you cannot shower your memory and get rid of nasty ones.

  87. Priscilla says:

A public bathroom at one of my local beaches; most people skip the bathroom all together and opt for the ocean instead. It’s gross either way, but I’d personally never step foot in there again.

  106. Michele D. says:

  114. mim says:

Worst place I’ve been was not on an airplane or restaurant–seems I’ve lucked out with those! Nope, it’s a tie between one train out of NY which had a clogged toilet (I’m getting the EW!s just thinking about it!) and one porta-potty at camp which was too dark for me to notice that someone had ‘missed’ (ew! ew! ew!!!).
Now I feel like a shower. Hope I win!

  125. Jeff M. says:

The dirtiest place I have been to was when one of my renters moved out and left the place a mess. They had only lived there for a few months but they had never taken out the trash, it was just strewn around the apartment in piles. I won’t go into gross disgusting details but it took me 2 weeks and $2000 to get the apartment back into a shape that I could rent it again! Thank you for the chance to win! Good luck everyone, Jeff

My hubby likes to race gokarts. The tracks are at least six hours away, so he likes to make a long weekend out of it. He also likes to camp at the track, which everyone does. I went with him once. There’s only one ladies room at the track and no one cleans it during the long weekends. I can’t share more info because I’m starting to feel a little queezy thinking about it. Suffice to say I don’t go with him any more unless he’s willing to stay at a nearby hotel.

  134. Susan Smith says:

A local store I went to only had a single bathroom and it was gross.

  135. Leslie S. says:

I would have to say it a local gas stations outdoor bathroom.I physically got ill after just opening the door. Thanks!

A street taco stand in Mexico where they let me use the employee bathroom. A disgusting toilet, no water, and a wastebasket full of used toilet paper. Not to mention what was on the floor. Need I say more?

  137. David Richardson says:

I worked at an Interstate 95 rest area for 2 years. Not really nice.

  138. Mary M says:

A “stand up” (on little pads) toilet for women in Italy.
    Yuck.

  139. Jennifer Hessel says:

We have a local park that has the worst bathroom facilities. They say there are cleaned daily but it is either a lie or there are some horrible people who do not respect their community enough to leave the bathroom somewhat useable.

  140. Julie says:

I would have loved 13 Soap at the casino the other day. Sat down, pushed a button – and the button was wet :( yuk!!!

  141. Joanna Smith says:

My husband and I when we were dating used to vacation at Cape Cod. We didn’t have a lot of money at the time, so we used to camp at this lovely campground in Welfleet, MA which is on the Cape. Now so as to not put down the campsite, it was a gorgeous spot to camp, but as you know camping is rough, and so were the facilities there. There was only 2 shower stalls for the entire campground. It was a small family run campground so when I use the term “roughing” it, I mean that literally. I think bathing in the fresh water ponds was much more sanitary than those old, moldy, and most definitely germ infested showers they had the campgrounds. I truly could have used this LUSH natural antibiotic travel soap for those camping trips. I used to wear my flip flops in the shower but I swear I might as well have been barefoot because I just feel the germs runneth over my feet as the water splashed on them. Thanks so much for the chance to enter.

This would have been useful in the last gas station bathroom I was in

  143. The basement at my job is horrible. It is used for equipment storage and is dirty, moldy and full of who knows what. My boss actually calls it “the stinky room”. Blech.

The worst place I have ever been is the Munich train station. It was so unbelieveable! As you walked around you could see urine and blood spots on the floor! There was a lady with a badly infected foot wrapped in rags and others who were clearly sick or ill. It was something.

  145. Carla says:

Public restrooms. Especially when people are too lazy to flush the toilet!

  146. Mya Brooks says:

A motel right in the middle of Nebraska…LOL It was a prostitution hang-out, and let’s just say none of us got ANY sleep that night… lol ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  147. Gloria says:

The dirtiest place was a friend’s house my twin sons stayed over night at. When I went to pick them up I went to their door and when the mother opened it, the place was covered with clothes and junk all over. There was no place to walk. So I just stood there and waited for them to come.

  148. Sarah C says:

Three words – Gas station bathroom. Nuff said.

  149. Brooke says:

That’s tough.. It’s a draw between a few places in Mexico and my trip to Peru… Peru is actually very very clean however, once you leave the tourist area it isn’t… Bathrooms with no towels or TP (you bring your own or have to pay for it)… It was amazing how long you could hold your pee…

  150. Wendy says:

Well, there was this bathroom, see, in a small dingy Mexican restaurant down in the city… The food was great, but we barely had any appetite left.

  151. Laura Wright says:

We could have used all 13 bars of 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt when the hotels in Angkor Wat, Cambodia, were full and we spent the night in a gardener’s cottage which looked as if it had not been cleaned for decades. We slept (cat napped) fully clothed amidst the jungle noises.

  152. Lentil says:

Most disgusting place: the bathroom of a ferry during a VERY rough crossing of the English Channel.

  153. jill klein says:

My daughter like to volunteer. She is 13 and volunteers at retirement home and with wild animal rescues…….Those both are very germy environments!

  155. Lee says:

New York City 42nd St. public bathroom. OH MY GAWD. The toilets were supposed to have these plastic covers that advanced after each person used them, but obviously they broke about 10 years ago. Public bathrooms in NYC are never clean, but this was awful and I was about to wet my pants. Urgh.

    Lee :(

  156. Veronica Garrett says:

I cold have used it after my husband got back from a hunting trip. The camper was totally grms and yuck.

  157. Sand says:

  158. Charlene Kuser says:

We went on a trip recently and stopped at a grocery store,
that was the nastiest, filthiest bathroom,I have ever seen.
It really had a bad smell and made me gag.I called the health department when I got to the hotel

  159. Heather C says:

Oh, that would be the shower facility at the end of the hiking trail (the one that has you out hiking and camping for two weeks?). Oh, yeah. Disgusting.

We were staging our background cars in a garage on the west side of Chicago. As a PA I wasnt allowed to leave and I had to use the restroom. Keep in mind Chicago isn’t the best place to find a public bathroom to begin with. The bathroom in the garage was the most disgusting bathroom I’d ever seen. It was a mens only room, urinals and one toilet divided by brick walls without doors. All surfaces were covered in slime and feces and who knows what else. It was like a scene out of the original Saw room. A blatent contrast to the nice clean concrete of the garage itself. The boys warned me not to go in there but I couldnt hold it. Girls cant find an alley and go discretely so I sucked it up, (literally, i held my breath) went in and made sure not to touch anything. Of course the sinks didnt work, so a bar of 13 soap with a bottled water would have been welcome!!

that was an incorrect email so i resubmit. sorry guys!
